Minutes

  • Privacy matters, attendance will not be entered into WaveLink anymore.
  • Upcoming speaker, that meetings are not conducted by a licensed therapist and should not be mistaken as such.
  • Main Topic: Death, with short presentation.
  • Time Tryth Truth by Current 93 which uses the writing of 17th-century French bishop and theologian Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet: “If I cast my eyes before me, what an infinite space in which I do not exist! And if I look behind me, what a terrible procession of years in which I do not exist, and how little space I occupy in this vast abyss of time!” This comes from his work Sermon sur la mort, or “Sermon on Death,” in which he explores his own existential crisis in recognizing that death awaits us all.
  • Dear God by XTC, which focuses on the refusal to believe in a god anymore, caused controversy when it was released as it was clearly anti-religion in the 80s—a time that was not tolerant of such views, nor one in which one could be publicly gay.
  • Discussion on thoughts about death, reincarnation, tree analogy that the universe and life overall is a tree and individual beings are the leaves which die with the seasons—the tree being what was important to preserve.
  • Brief exploration of attendee heritages.
  • Morality claims made by religion, reading Deuteronomy 22:22–29 which clearly places females as inferior humans and property, stating that if a man rapes a virgin not promised to be married, he is forced to pay a fine and marry her and never divorce. The victim isn’t considered at all—fine morals, eh?
  • Speaking in tongues was brought up and a clip from the documentary Jesus Camp was shown with children being ordered to speak in tongues. Discussion followed on attending Christian camps.
  • Discussion UNCW religious groups, aggressive Mormons, and Jehovah’s Witness members pushing religion on campus inside halls and in common areas.
  • Subjugation of women in the bible.
  • Thoughts on abortion. Do gods allow for spontaneous abortion, if so, is it acceptable in some circumstances?
  • Everyone bringing snacks to share.
